Travellers Rest

Picture

Country:  Uganda

Location: Kisoro

Style: Lodge

Started in 1955, Travellers Rest rapidly grew into an oasis for many gorilla scientists.    Renovated in 1999, it now forms a cosy, charming hotel with a unique historical value.   Dian Fossey called it her second home.

It consists of 1 suite and 11 en suite rooms, decorated with a unique selection of African art.  The spacious rooms overlook a well groomed courtyard with the Virunga volcanoes as a backdrop.

Gorilla trekking is a thrilling encounter which can be experienced from the southern sector of Bwindi National Park, a magnificent rainforest on the steep slopes of the Albertine Rift Valley.

Protecting the Ugandan part of the Virunga Mountains, Mgahinga National Park offers several rewarding walks to the majestic volcanoes, caves and crater lakes.   Depending on the altitude, different eco-systems and forest will be encountered.

Mgahinga National Park harbours the unique golden monkeys to which trekking expeditions are organized.

Several birdwatching tours are conducted in Mgahinga National Park, Bwindi National Park and along the shores of Lake Mutanda.

Visits to the colourful local market introduce guests to the life and culture of the local Bufumbira and Bachiga tribes.

After being expelled from their traditional grounds, the Pygmies are now forced to adopt a different and harsh lifestyle.
