The Desert Homestead

Picture

Country:  Namibia

Location: Namib Desert

Style: Luxury Lodge

The Desert Homestead is in a wide, grassy valley sheltered by the Nubib, Tsaris and Naukluft mountains, with a view reaching the distant dunes of the Namib Desert in the west.

In this exquisite position are 20 thatched chalets designed with the fragile environment in mind, all luxuriously decorated in pale linens and dark wood riempie furniture.

Each unit has its own veranda under a latte canopy.   Inside they provide luxury, with large single or double beds and en suite bathroom with shower and toilet.   The lights and fans in the guest accommodation are powered by a bank of batteries, which are charged by wind power and solar power during daytime.   All guest amenities (soaps, shampoo, body lotion etc.) are environmentally friendly.

The living areas of the main lodge are all open plan, encouraging you to move around freely.

The most prominent feature is the well sheltered veranda where leisurely breakfasts, lunches, and candle lit dinners in a creative farm style cuisine are served, with fresh vegetables from local desert gardens.   Inside is a cosy lounge with ethnic African decoration and comfortable leather sofas.

Satellite TV is available in a separate room and internet facilities for guests are available in the adjacent Curio shop.   The bar provides an opportunity to relax and chat with the managers and the owners.

The swimming pool in front of the main building is good for a refreshing dip and is well utilised throughout the year.

Activities you can enjoy include Sossusvlei excursions in an air-conditioned 4x4 vehicle, departing before sunrise for the best photographic opportunities.   The excursion is conducted by a guide with in depth knowledge of the area and takes 7 - 8 hours including a picnic lunch.

Naukluft excursions are a great option, especially for guests with a 3rd night at the lodge.   The trip in an air-conditioned 4x4 vehicle lasts 5 – 6 hours and includes non strenuous hiking to rock pools, great birding and a variety of wildlife, and snacks and drinks.

A Sundowner drive in an air-conditioned 4x4 vehicle in the 22 000 hectares Kulala Wilderness Reserve provides an opportunity to come face to face with the pro-Namib and is a relaxing way to end the day with snacks, sundowners and beautiful views.

A range of  Horse sleep-outs encompasses luxury camping in the desert in dome tents, with hot bucket showers, chilled white wine, and fine bush cuisine.   Horses and camps are selected to suit varied levels of guests’ experience and a back-up team takes care of all logistics.

Horse breakfast and sundowner rides through varied terrain for 3 – 4 hours cater for guests with more limited time constraints.

A self-guided, clearly marked walking trail takes you up onto a small mountain close to the lodge providing lovely views and a great way to stretch your legs and unwind after a long drive.

Other activities in the area, including quad biking, hot air ballooning, scenic helicopter flights, and wine tasting at Neuras Estate, can all be arranged at the lodge by the friendly and welcoming Desert Homestead personnel.
