Stanley's Camp

Picture

Country:  Botswana

Location: Okavango Delta

Style: Luxury Tented Camp

Activities: Land and water based (seasonal)

Sanctuary Stanley's is a classic tented camp built around an imposing sausage tree on a private concession overlooking the Okavango floodplains.

The area surrounding the camp changes with the seasons - from lush green when the rain flows down from the Angolan highlands to dry savannah when the Kalahari Desert tightens its grip.

This intimate camp, with its 8 tents, is gathered around a large sitting and dining area which affords you magnificent views over the floodplains of the Okavango Delta.

Each tent is individually designed, all having a classic and colonial appeal.   Large wooden decks provide private areas for you to relax in hammocks or enjoy cocktails before dinner in the dining mess.

From the swimming pool giraffe and other plains game can be seen across the savannah.   This region is ideal for viewing buffalo in large numbers, with herds often exceeding 2,000.

Game drives are out of the ordinary here, as water crossings are often part of the adventure.   Seeing zebra standing belly-deep in the water and giraffe crossing the water up to their hocks adds a fascinating touch to these remarkable trips.

During higher water levels, game drives are combined with motorised boating excursions.   Night drives are seasonal, depending on water levels.

Mokoro excursions along the narrow Delta channels offer you serene silence as they glide through lily ponds in these dugout canoes.   Coming eye to eye with a buffalo as it laps water from the river, watching crocodiles sunbathe on the banks or cruising past a pod of hippos as they wallow in a pool can be spine chilling.

Fish eagles, frogs and other water related species contribute to making this a memorable journey.

Professional guides accompany you in exploring the bush on walking safaris which provide opportunities to discover the small 5 and the various flora in the area.

At extra cost guests can have an astonishing experience accompanying 3 semi-habituated elephants on a leisurely walk through the bush as they forage for food.   These orphaned elephants were brought up in the area and from an early age are accustomed to interacting with humans.

Personalised scenic helicopter flights involve flying west of the game drive routes towards the permanent delta, exposing areas which are unreachable by vehicle or boat.   You have the option of the doors being removed for unrestricted photographic opportunities.   This is done with the utmost consideration for everyone’s safety.

Regrettably children under the age of 9 are not catered for.
