Sitatunga Mobile Tented Camp

Picture

Country: Zambia

Location: Kasanka National Park

Style: Speciality Tented Camp

Every November, Sitatunga Mobile Tented Camp is set up in the Kasanka National Park for the world famous Straw Coloured Fruit Bat migration.

This ‘pop-up’ camp is there throughout the month of November when 8-10 million fruit bats congregate in a small 2 hectare island of Mushitu forest.   At dusk, all the bats fly out of the forest in the world’s largest mammal migration known to man and return at dawn in what is referred to as a ‘blizzard of bats.’

The camp is made up of excellent food, safari tents, hot showers and flush toilets.  It is the closest camp to the bat migration in Kasanka and you can even see the bat colony from the camp fireplace.

The daily routine is an early pre-dawn wake-up with a quick cup of tea or coffee to watch the bats return in the morning.  This is done from one of the hides that is located around the bat forest.  It’s then back to camp for breakfast, after which you can enjoy either a game drive or walk.

In the late afternoon it is a nice walk or drive to the evening bat-watching location, and once the sun has set you return to camp for sundowners and dinner.

Every morning and evening sitatunga feed on the natural lawns in front of camp, and you can watch the occasional Blue Monkey feeding in the Mushitu forest clumps where the camp is positioned.

Other options in Kasanka include a day trip to the amazing Kundalila Falls and the rock paintings at Nsalu Caves.
