Numerous opportunities for those wishing to interact with the local community are available, such as strolling through a small tea farming project, visiting a local beer brewery using mashed bananas, and trips to a local clinic which Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp supports through various projects. After being introduced to a traditional medicine man, a performance by the Batwa pygmy community entertains you before returning to the lodge.
As an additional activity, trekking gorillas is always a highlight of any tour to the area. This opportunity is afforded only to a select few, as a mere 8 visitors are allowed to view each group every day.
Once the gorillas are located, you are allowed a maximum of 1 hour to spend with them before returning to camp. As the forest is dense with steep slopes, participants need to be physically fit to cope with the track.
Please note only children aged 15 and over can track gorillas.
Sanctuary Retreats are proud to be working with Pack for a Purpose®, a registered charity who partner with wilderness camps and hotels across the world to bring much needed school and medical supplies to poor and remote communities.
The camp is accessed either by scheduled flights or scenic road transfers.
