Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp

Picture

Country:  Uganda

Location: Bwindi Impenetrable
                   Forest

Style: Luxury Tented Camp

Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp is positioned on a flat ridge inside Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in southwest Uganda.

The 8 tents are designed with wooden floors and decks and include a bathtub where you have a direct view of the jungle's canopy.

Dining at the camp is under the stars by a roaring campfire and on cooler evenings the central cottage provides a warm shelter.

This camp has the unique and thrilling advantage of receiving regular visits from the gorillas themselves, up to 4-6 visits per month.   You may even be one of those incredibly fortunate guests to have the opportunity of encountering gorillas without even leaving the camp!

In addition to abundant wildlife such as the rare forest elephant, giant forest hog, a variety of antelopes, 11 kinds of primates including red tailed and blue monkey, black and white colobus, baboons and chimpanzee, there are more than 350 species of birds and over 200 species of butterflies found in the area.

A local expert is on hand to guide keen birders on a fascinating 2-3 hour walk through the park.

Another 3 hour guided walk is along the Munyaga waterfall trail through the forest.

Numerous opportunities for those wishing to interact with the local community are available, such as strolling through a small tea farming project, visiting a local beer brewery using mashed bananas, and trips to a local clinic which Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp supports through various projects.   After being introduced to a traditional medicine man, a performance by the Batwa pygmy community entertains you before returning to the lodge.

As an additional activity, trekking gorillas is always a highlight of any tour to the area.   This opportunity is afforded only to a select few, as a mere 8 visitors are allowed to view each group every day.

Once the gorillas are located, you are allowed a maximum of 1 hour to spend with them before returning to camp.   As the forest is dense with steep slopes, participants need to be physically fit to cope with the track.

Please note only children aged 15 and over can track gorillas.

Sanctuary Retreats are proud to be working with Pack for a Purpose®, a registered charity who partner with wilderness camps and hotels across the world to bring much needed school and medical supplies to poor and remote communities.

The camp is accessed either by scheduled flights or scenic road transfers.
