Rorke's Drift Hotel

Picture

Country: South Africa

Location: KwaZulu Natal

Style: Hotel

Rorke’s Drift Hotel is in the centre of the actions of the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879.   Nearby Blood River and Talana respectively add interest to the Boer-Zulu confrontation in 1838 and the South African war of 1899-1902.

The historic crossing which gives the area its name is within the grounds and there is also the battlefield where 11 Victoria Crosses were awarded.

Accommodation in the ‘Fort’ offers 7 huge double/twin en suite rooms, and although the outer building follows the traditional Zulu style, the décor and finishes in the centre are inspired by the Victorians.

There are also 4 single en suite rooms in the main building – the River Rooms.

A family suite is just beside the battlefield if you prefer an even closer encounter with history.

Each of the rooms is named after a distinguished character from 19th Century Natal history.

The circular style of the building with natural coloured finishes and soaring thatched roof draws from the Zulu tradition.   Within this space are the bar, lounge and dining areas all of which have huge windows maximising the views.

A gift shop and the Bushman Room library are housed in the lobby.

Views along and across the river are spectacular and full of interest, affording easy walks in the natural bush surroundings.

As this region is steeped in history, a battlefield guiding service is provided for visitors.

What better way to experience the countryside and the historic trails than on horseback!

Other points of interest and activities are Bushmen paintings, a craft centre, riverside walks, picnicking, birding, rafting, tubing, and boating.
