Old Mondoro

Picture

Country: Zambia

Location: Lower Zambezi National Park

Style: Luxury Camp

Old Mondoro, in the Lower Zambezi National Park, is a family owned award winning camp providing guests with an authentic, intimate safari experience that concentrates on the wildlife and "back to the bush," whilst not forgoing any creature comforts or service.

That said, Old Mondoro is a destination in its own right that also offers some of the most prolific leopard sightings to be had in Africa.   Could one want for more ?

Accommodating only 8 guests, this camp is appropriately constructed with canvas and natural materials.   Its open and adventurous feel provides you with a perfect retreat after a day filled with excitement in the bush and yet where much of the action will happen right on your own doorstep.

Overlooking a maze of hippo-inhabited islands from a grove of Acacia trees that tower above the massive elephant bulls that seem to be constantly feeding on them, this is perhaps one of the most beautiful and remote parts of the Lower Zambezi National Park.

Features in the rooms are mosquito nets, Egyptian cotton linens, 24 hr lighting, hot and cold water supply in the en suite facilities which include indoor flush loo and wash basin and outdoor shower and huge “splash-tub” all overlooking the Zambezi.

In addition is a shaded timber sun deck complete with comfy daybed for relaxation with the very best of views.

At Old Mondoro it is all about the wildlife, the bush and the river.   An impressive variety of safari activities is available, led by the award winning team of Africa-born guides with a fleet of vehicles, boats and canoes at their disposal.

This means that you will enjoy many levels of choice and convenience, where the duration of a safari activity is determined by the rhythm of the bush rather than by the clock.

The safest and most effective way to view big game is on daily drives which are conducted in open 4wd vehicles that have been specially adapted for safari use with comfy seats, pockets to stow your gear and bean bags to steady your camera for those all-important photos.

Sundowners follow a late afternoon drive, and once the sun has set, night drives commence.

Filtered spotlights, which do not interfere with the wellbeing and behaviour of the animals, and easier on your eyes too, provide opportunities to see nocturnal creatures such as civet, porcupine, genet, and also some of the larger predators on the move.

Bush walks are essentially a "micro-safari."   An armed ranger with your qualified and experienced pro guide will direct you through the wilderness, interpreting spoor, identifying the various flora and fauna, and highlighting conservation issues.

However, elephants and buffalo are seen on most walks and sometimes the big cats, so you can expect anything at any time.  The pace is leisurely and the duration is determined by your requirements.

River safaris are offered by virtue of Old Mondoro being on the Zambezi River.   Cruises in custom built, motorized pontoons explore numerous channels, viewing hippo, buffalo, elephant and prolific bird life.

Although the Zambezi offers many activities, perhaps it is best known for canoeing.   Six meter long Canadian canoes are used and these trips may last anywhere from 1 hour to 1 day.

Safety is always a priority, so all guides have recurrent advanced first aid training and all boats and vehicles, canoe trips and walks carry comprehensive first aid kits and are linked to the camp by VHF radio network.
