The update on Rwanda gorilla permits

9/2/2012

A fair bit of info has been going around concerning the increase in price of Rwandan gorilla trekking permits.

Here are the confirmed details:

All gorilla permits for 2013 and beyond now cost US$750 per permit.

Any gorilla permits for 2012 bought and paid for before the end of May 2012 remain at US$500 per permit.

Any gorilla permits for 2012 bought and paid for after the beginning of June 2012 will cost US$750 per permit.

While this is not a cheap activity by any means, it is also one of the most unique wildlife experiences around.  A population of roughly 700 mountain gorillas is all that remains in the wild, and when you put it into perspective, you could fit all of them into one school hall.

It is through the tourism and conservation efforts being supported by these costs that we will hopefully not entirely lose these amazing creatures, and our kids' kids will also one day be able to trek into the jungles to see them.

Sitting in the lush volcanoes of central Africa will be an experience you'll cherish forever.
