Moivaro Lake Natron Tented Camp

Picture

Country:  Tanzania

Location: Lake Natron

Style: Tented Camp

Wild and remote alkaline Lake Natron lies in the north east of  Tanzania in between the Ngorongoro Highlands and Serengeti plains and is situated at the base of Africa's only active volcano, Oldonyo L'Engai (Mountain of God).

Home to millions of tiny crustaceans, the lake is a haven for thousands of  lesser flamingos and is an important flamingo breeding ground.

The area around the lake is dry, desolate and hauntingly beautiful.

Unique in its setting, Lake Natron Camp is in a grove of trees slightly removed from the dusty terrain of the lake.

The 9 A-frame safari tents provide electricity, running water, showers and private verandas with views of the incredible landscape.

In addition are 4 self-contained mobile tents including electricity and running water.   The 11 fly tents are not self-contained, but have private toilets and shower blocks.

The campsite is equipped with a restaurant and bar, 2 kitchens, a mess tent, toilets, showers and a natural swimming pool.

Climbing L'Engai can be arranged with an experienced guide.   Despite it being a hard climb through notoriously spiky vegetation, no special equipment is required.   The expedition to the top is rewarded with the sight of some spectacular magma flows bubbling at over 500°C.

A less demanding walk can be arranged followed by either a picnic breakfast or sundowners by the lake.

Nearby is a freshwater waterfall where you can swim, cool off and relax.

Other local activities involve excursions to see the flamingos, bush dinner walks, trekking on the escarpment as well as cultural visits.
