Kicheche Laikipia

Picture

Country:  Kenya

Location: Laikipia

Style: Luxury Tented Camp

Kicheche Laikipia Camp is located in the wilderness zone of Ol Pejeta Conservancy under the shadow of Mount Kenya.

This conservancy is home to Kenya’s largest population of black rhino, considerable numbers of elephant, cheetah, lion, leopard and plentiful plains game.  It also hosts a number of rare northern species like Grevys zebra, Jackson’s hartebeest and Beisa oryx.

Kicheche Laikipia Camp has 6 luxurious tents nestled on the edge of indigenous woodland overlooking a waterhole.   Each tent has a shower with hot and cold running water.

A family quad tent is available on request.

The camp communal area consists of a large interconnected lounge/ dining tent.  This roomy tent has wonderful large stone fire places providing a warm evening environment, but also opens up in the front to overlook the waterhole and surrounding bush.

The relaxing lounge area has comfortable chairs with a selection of reference books and a small curio shop.

Breakfast and lunch are usually taken under the shade of spreading trees overlooking the waterhole and evening meals are served by candle light either under the stars or in the dining tent.

Experienced guides will co-ordinate your day game viewing excursions during which picnic breakfasts and lunches are provided.   Night game drives are also arranged which focus on nocturnal species not seen on regular day drives.

Watching wildlife at close range, but without encroaching on their space, is endlessly fascinating and the guides’ instincts and experience provide superb photo opportunities of wild animals.

Natural safari colours are recommended especially if you are game walking.

Safety is of paramount importance and therefore askaris (night-watchmen) patrol the camp at regular intervals after dark.   You are advised to remain in your tent after dark, and will be escorted between your tent and the lounge/dining areas by a staff member.

Each tent is equipped with a whistle to call for assistance in case of emergency.

Children are welcome, but adults must be aware that as the camp is not fenced, there are no extra facilities provided to occupy them outside normal excursions.

Some additional activities available are visiting a successful breeding programme, lion tracking programme, and visiting an educational wildlife centre containing a range of exhibits and background on the conservancy and its operations - an interesting stop for children and adults alike.

The Chimpanzee Sanctuary offers a home to orphaned chimps from West Africa and is an excellent venue to observe the 2 families and learn about the perils facing chimpanzees in the wild.
