Kaya Mawa

Picture

Country: Malawi

Location: Lake Malawi/

                 Likoma Island

Style: Luxury Resort

Kaya Mawa is on Likoma Island which is set about half way up Lake Malawi.

Accommodation consists of a variety of houses, and premium and standard rooms, each  being named after a local village.    Many of these have their own private plunge pool.

The restaurant is used for buffet breakfasts and lunches.

The multi-level deck area offers seating at the bar, around coffee tables or a lounging area on comfy sofas, and just meters from the water you can enjoy magnificent sunset views.

Dinner options, with international cuisine, are varied - on a beach, a deck, a platform, on the gazebo, or a perfect surprise private table every night.

Wireless Internet connectivity, computers, scanners, printers and telephones are all available.

When embarking on a sight-seeing tour of the island, St Peter's Cathedral in Mbamba town never fails to impress one.   It is over 100 years old and larger than Winchester !    Here you will also find the small cobbled market where locals get their daily supplies.

At the north point of the island is a forest reserve, near to some beautiful beaches.

On weekends during the “dancing season” (September to New Year’s day) local dancing groups compete with visiting dancers from Chizimulu Island.

Activities are abundant, revolving mainly around water sports.   They include sailing, kayaking, windsurfing, waterskiing, wakeboarding, snowboarding on water, doughnutting, kneeboarding, fishing, and snorkelling.

Likoma Island, surrounded by the pristine waters of Lake Malawi, is a beautiful scuba dive location, offering an immense diversity of fish species.

Besides aquatic life, there are also spectacular underwater rock formations.   You can even swim through a 30-metre wall and a rock carving.
