Katara Lodge

Picture

Country:  Uganda

Location: Queen Elizabeth National Park

Style: Luxury Lodge

Situated on the Great Rift Valley escarpment with uninterrupted views of the savannah, Lake Edward and the Virunga and Rwenzori mountain ranges, Katara Lodge is a 20 minute drive away from the main entrance to the Queen Elizabeth National Park.

The lodge offers accommodation in 6 regular cottages and one family cottage on a beautiful stretch of hills overlooking the open savannah.

The regular cottages each have an en suite bathroom and a large open sleeping and sitting area, with a double bed and a four poster star bed that can be wheeled out onto the veranda to sleep directly under the starlit African sky (only recommended during the dry season!).

The family cottage has two separate bedrooms, a small sitting area and bathroom, and a private outside area with a swing couch and two hammocks.

Each cottage was hand crafted using locally available materials and carved into the hillside by the Katara village community.

The cottages combine wooden floors, grass thatched roofs and canvas that can be folded away for uninterrupted views of the park stretching out below.

Katara Lodge is an ideal base from which to explore the park and the many activities it offers, including game drives, bird watching, a launch cruise along the Kazinga Channel, chimpanzee trekking in the Kyambura Gorge, and forest walks in the Kalinzu or Maramagambo forests, all of which provide truly memorable wildlife experiences and amazing opportunities for nature photography.

The lodge makes every effort to minimize any impact on the environment.   It uses extensive rain water harvesting, heats all water using solar water heaters, and uses ultra low flush toilets throughout the lodge.

All lighting and electrical outlets are solar powered and the salt water swimming pool further reduces reliance on harmful chemicals.
