Huntingdon House

Picture

Country: Malawi

Location: Shire Highlands

Style: Luxury House

Originally a family home built in 1928, Huntingdon House, on the Satemwa Estate, exudes a colonial charm and unique character.  It is surrounded by sprawling manicured gardens with secret patios and terraces.

Guests are accommodated in 5 suites with superb bathrooms featuring clawed bath tubs and separate showers.

Each room has been individually decorated to reflect the quirks and character of this grand residence and appropriately named based on their original function in the household: Mother's Room, Father's Room, The Nursery, Planters' Suite and The Chapel.

Satemwa is conveniently located and day trips to Majete Game Reserve in the Lower Shire Valley, Zomba Plateau, Blantyre or Mulanje are possible.

Guided excursions on this tea growing estate introduce you to the full process from planting through to harvesting and production.

Though Satemwa is primarily a tea growing estate, it has now moved into the coffee industry.   A 1.5 hour tour through coffee fields is offered ending with a coffee tasting at the pulpery.

Mountain bikes are available for guests looking to explore at their own pace.

Take a leisurely stroll to one of the streams, meander through the coffee fields or wander through Thyolo Mountain's forests to enjoy breath-taking views over the estate and surrounding areas.

The varied vegetation on the estate provides ideal habitats for a variety of Malawi's bird species including the little-known bird of Africa’s disappearing montane evergreen forests, the Thyolo Alethe (Alethe choloensis).

Various lawn games are available, such as croquet and boulle.  Thyolo Sports Club, situated on grounds, features a 9 hole golf course, swimming pool, and tennis.
