Mahale Mountains National Park
Luxury Lodge

Greystoke Mahale is positioned on the shores of Lake Tanganyika at the foot of the Mahale Mountains which are home to one of the largest populations of chimpanzees in Africa.

Greystoke Mahale has just 6 wood and thatch bandas set on the edge of the forest line at the base of the mountains.

These open-fronted rooms look out across the soft sandy beach and crystal-clear water.

Each one has an en suite bathroom - accessible by a short boardwalk - with hot and cold running water, strong showers and flush toilets.   Included are a dressing room and upstairs chill-out deck.

There are no charging plugs available in the rooms, but charging can be done centrally in the mess.

Regrettably hairdryers cannot be used in camp.

Dining is in the main mess banda on the beach, and sundowners are served in the bar on the rocks at the end of the beach.

Daily laundry is done in camp, but please note that laundry facilities are quite basic and ironing is done with a coal iron.

Other facilities are a safe in the manager’s office, headland bar on the rocks, and separate dining area plus upstairs library.

As there is no cell phone coverage, the camp is in HF radio and internet contact with the main Nomad office and has a satellite phone in case of emergencies.

Lake Tanganyika, the second deepest lake in the world, is all yours to explore by boat or kayak.

This region offers many activities with a difference.   Enjoy a hike along the forest paths looking for birds (355 species on record) and the treasure trove of butterflies as well as the other shy mammals who quietly live there, or swim in ice-cold pools up in the mountain waterfalls.

Take a kayak out for a dawn paddle towards the middle of the lake, and drink your morning coffee there while enjoying the sunrise coming up over the mountains.

You can go for sundowners on the old wooden dhow, lazily following the shoreline and stopping to fish along the way, or just relax on the warm sands of the beach.

And of course there is chimp trekking!   Spend time with the habituated chimpanzees of the M-Group.   You will find yourself just a few feet away from them as they go about their daily lives, while they remain entirely indifferent to your presence.

Please note that only 12 people per day can go chimp trekking.

Greystoke Mahale welcomes children over the age of 8, but only children from 12 years are permitted to trek chimps.
