Great Fish River Lodge

Picture

Country:  South Africa

Location: Kwandwe Private Game Reserve

 Style: Luxury Lodge

Great Fish River Lodge is in the Kwandwe Private Game Reserve, which is surrounded by 22 000 hectares of exclusive, malaria-free wilderness and featuring 30 km of privately owned river frontage of the Great Fish River.

Set along the lush green banks of the river after which it is named, the lodge with its 9 luxurious suites has been designed to take full advantage of the spectacular scenery.  Floor-to-ceiling doors fold back to reveal uninterrupted vistas.

The en suite bathrooms, complete with baths and indoor and outdoor showers, offer unmatched views over the sweeping landscape beyond.  Each suite includes a separate toilet, twin basins, hairdryer, personal bar, in room safe, fan and air conditioning, as well as a spacious thatched veranda and private plunge pool with terrace.   A poolside butler service is also provided.

Guest areas are spacious, with generous, wrap-around viewing decks leading from the dining room, bar and sitting areas.   Stone walls, thatch and long wooden walkways bring natural materials into the interiors.

The decor and ambience of Great Fish River Lodge hearkens back to a grander time.  Huge fireplaces cast warmth and light over richly woven rugs, yellowwood kists and wardrobes,  and an enviable collection of antiques.

Pan African cuisine can be served on your private deck, enjoyed under a canopy of stars in the firelit boma, and in the gracious dining room.

A well-stocked safari shop offers clothing, books, gifts and African crafts.

Watch majestic kudu meander down to the river from the lodge’s expansive viewing decks, or observe playful Cape clawless otters swimming in the cool waters below from the comfort of your private balcony.

There are morning, afternoon/evening and night game drives as well as guided bush walks, bush sundowners and picnics on the reserve, fishing, rhino capture and research, archaeological, battlefield and historical tours to Grahamstown and surroundings.

Great Fish River Lodge is in game-rich country with the Big 5 (black and white rhino, elephant, lion, buffalo and leopard) as well as a remarkable variety of predators and general game including cheetah, antelope, hartebeest, giraffe, and spotted porcupine.

Nocturnal viewing is excellent – aardwolf and aardvark being regularly sighted.

This region is a paradise for birdwatchers with an abundance of birdlife.

Scenic coastal flights and specialist safaris such as Frontiers at Kwandwe, carnivore research at Kwandwe, and photographic safaris are all at additional cost.

Regretfully it is not safe for children under 12 years to stay at Great Fish River Lodge.

The lodge is not fenced off, and you are requested to please be extremely vigilant at all times.  Under no circumstances is a guest to walk around the lodge/camp at night, unless accompanied by a security guard.
