Chief's CampCountry: Botswana
Location: Moremi Game Reserve / Okavango Delta Style: Luxury Lodge Activities: Land and water based (seasonal) Sanctuary Chief's Camp is located on Chief's Island, one of the many islands created by the seasonal floodwaters of the Okavango.
The island was named after Chief Moremi, the hereditary king of the area who used the lands as his royal hunting grounds. The Moremi's people, the Tawana, have since formed these grounds into a protective reserve for wildlife. Spacious and breezy, hidden in a jackalberry and sausage tree woodland, at 140m2 the 10 stylish bush pavilions are some of the region’s largest places to spend the night. Modern enhancements, such as airconditioning, as well as traditional fans, are among the cut-above amenities. The bathrooms have floor-to-ceiling windows and folding glass doors leading to outdoor showers and generous tubs. The communal decked living room has stunning views over the floodplains, while the dining area surrounds a fire pit on the very edge of the Piajio plains so that you can continue your game viewing while enjoying fine cuisine and wines. The guest pavilions were designed with consideration for the environment - all rubbish is transported from the park for responsible disposal and the entire camp can be removed without a trace of having been there. This region is home to large herds of elephant and buffalo, and each June the entire area around the camp is flooded and transformed into a labyrinth of lily-filled lagoons and streams where hippos and crocodiles are in abundance. |
Poling on mekoros through the byways created by the floodwaters and in the company of highly trained local guides, are ideal for close encounters with the biggest of game from a totally different angle – looking up onto the banks rather than down onto them. This activity is subject to water levels.
